I have used google adwords in the past. Although google adwords are easier to track in terms of effectiveness when used with google analytics, I found Microsoft Adcentre to be much better value.
Your adds should appear straight away but if you are bidding small amounts you may need to look through loads of pages to find them. Google should give you a rough idea of which page of the results they should be on, if not I foound a great site that will (see first link below).

They usually appear after a few minutes.

When you add Adsense to a website it may take a few minutes for the advertisement to appear. Google recommends allowing 10 minutes. That’s all there is to it.

“Your ads can begin running once you’ve done three things: Sign up for an AdWords account, create your first campaign, and submit your billing information.” - Google
But there could be a delay of upto 48hrs. even though you have completed all the above requirements. It depends on your ad and landing page if adwords programme sees some sort of irregularity in your campaign then it may delay your ad.
